R. Kelly's song Heart of a Woman is a reflective R&B ballad about the emotional damage caused when a man neglects or mistreats a woman who has given him her trust. Addressed partly as advice from one man to another, Heart of a Woman warns that selfishness, deception and taking a loyal partner for granted can eventually destroy even a strong relationship.
Heart of a Woman appeared as the third track on R. Kelly's 2003 album Chocolate Factory. The recording was written, arranged and produced by R. Kelly, with the album credits also listing Donnie Lyle on guitar and bass, Rodney East on keyboards and Abel Garibaldi among the engineers and mixers.
Heart of a Woman was not released as one of the album's major commercial singles, although it received enough R&B airplay to reach No. 24 on Billboard's Bubbling Under R&B/Hip-Hop Singles chart. Chocolate Factory itself reached No. 1 on both the Billboard 200 and Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart after its release through Jive Records on February 18, 2003.
R. Kelly delivers Heart of a Woman with a restrained and serious tone, allowing the message to take priority over vocal display. The arrangement carries the polished slow groove associated with early 2000s quiet storm R&B, but the heart of the recording is its reminder that love also carries responsibility. Heart of a Woman asks men to listen, show appreciation and understand that emotional trust can be difficult to restore once it has been broken.
