This 1936 half crown lived through the maddest year in British royal history: one coin, three kings, twelve months. By the end of this video you'll know exactly why one of those kings never got a single coin with his own face on it. Bought this coin on Whatnot for sixteen quid, just over 14 grams of silver, worn enough to show real circulation. Nothing special to look at. But this exact coin was already in someone's pocket the day George V died in January 1936, still there when Edward VIII took the throne and then walked away from it eleven months later to marry Wallis Simpson, and still there when George VI took over the same day. The Royal Mint had already started planning Edward VIII's own coinage before the abdication happened, new portrait and everything, and it never got the chance. Not one of his coins ever reached a pocket in Britain. A tiny number of trial pieces survived the melt-down that followed, and one of those sold at auction for over a million pounds. This is the story of an ordinary sixteen-quid coin that quietly sat through all of it.
