What does everyday family life look like when a powerful typhoon hits Shenzhen, China? On July 26, 2026, Typhoon Hongxia brought strong winds and heavy rain to the city. We canceled all our plans and stayed safely indoors with our two young boys, playing with toys, reading books and listening to the storm outside. Later, after the rain had eased and we had checked the weather conditions, we realized that we were almost out of food. We decided to visit a nearby shopping mall and return home as soon as possible. But the moment we left our neighborhood, the familiar streets looked completely different. Broken branches covered the roads. Large trees had been blown over, construction equipment was scattered everywhere, and some parked cars were trapped beneath fallen trees. When we reached the shopping mall, we found it unusually quiet. Most stores and restaurants were closed, and only McDonald’s and one other restaurant were still open. This video isn’t a news report. It is simply an honest record of what an ordinary family in Shenzhen experienced during and after a powerful typhoon. For adults, it was a serious and unsettling day.
