In this episode of UDL in Action Podcast, Rebecca Rosenberg speaks with Associate Professor Melissa Fanshawe about the powerful connection between Universal Design for Learning (UDL), visual accessibility and inclusive mathematics education. Drawing on Melissa’s 25 years of classroom experience, the conversation explores how offering multiple ways to engage with mathematical concepts, develop understanding and demonstrate learning can create more inclusive and meaningful educational experiences for all students. Together, Rebecca and Melissa discuss the importance of hands-on learning, real-world problem-solving, flexible approaches to mathematical thinking and accessible learning materials. The episode highlights how UDL empowers educators to design learning experiences that recognise learner variability, encourage curiosity and enable every student to participate, build confidence and experience success. Educators applying UDL principles can move beyond a one-size-fits-all approach and help students see the possibilities in mathematics, and in themselves.
