On the 4th of December 1872, the crew of the Dei Gratia found the brigantine Mary Celeste drifting between the Azores and Portugal. Her cargo of 1,701 barrels of alcohol was still aboard, there was food for six months, and her only boat was gone. Captain Benjamin Briggs, his wife Sarah, their two-year-old daughter Sophia and seven sailors were never seen again.
Instead of repeating the legend, we rebuild the last days from what the witnesses left behind: the captain's letter, the log slate, the sworn testimony of the boarding party at the Gibraltar salvage hearing, the accusations of Attorney General Frederick Solly-Flood, and the short story by Arthur Conan Doyle that invented many of the details people still believe. Then we put the theories on trial (pirates and mutiny, a waterspout, a seaquake, alcohol vapour, a failing pump) and give our own reasoned verdict. It is an opinion, not a proven fact: the case is still debated.
