Gavin reflects on what happens when a major Student Record System implementation moves into business as usual, and how institutions retain the governance, attention and design thinking that made the transformation possible in the first place. He describes the Enterprise Design Authority for student systems, which he chairs, as central to that approach. Rather than beginning with the system, the Authority starts with the question, challenge or opportunity the university is trying to address, bringing together expertise from across the institution to design the right response. Sometimes that response will involve the Student Record System; sometimes it will not. For Gavin, this outcomes-led rather than systems-led approach is how institutions continue to get value from pivotal technology without becoming constrained by it. It carries the thinking developed through implementation into the permanent operation of the university, while creating the capacity to respond as technology, institutional needs and student expectations continue to change. Part of Beetroot Consulting’s Transformation in Practice series, Gavin’s videos sit alongside further forthcoming papers and wider campaign content exploring transformation in practice. At the time of recording, Gavin was Academic Registrar at the University of Northampton. He is now Interim Chief Operating Officer. Following these video's Gavin Barber & Kanika Selvan collaborated offer the reports and thinking for business Sponsors of transformation with a non-technical and a yearning to learn the lessons of others in the industry.
