Who does America actually owe? Not mostly China. In fiscal 2026 the U.S. paid $1.05 trillion in net interest on the national debt, more than its entire military budget. We follow that money to find out who owns U.S. debt, why the interest bill tripled in five years, and which side of the bill you're on.
Inside: who holds the $40 trillion national debt (Social Security trust funds, the Federal Reserve, Japan, China, the U.K., money market funds, banks, pensions), why Treasury yields and mortgage rates moved together, and whether this is a debt crisis.
