US diesel hit the highest price ever recorded on September 21. Two weeks later it was falling, and consumption was 11% below normal in the peak month. That is not relief.
On-highway diesel peaked at $6.529/gal, the highest in the series since it began in 1994, and fell to $6.199 by October 5. In the same week, distillate product supplied came in around 3.7 million b/d, roughly 11% below the usual October level, with the four-week average down about 6%. Inventories neither fell nor rebuilt, sitting 12-13% below the five-year average at about 105 million barrels. Refineries are producing 5.3 million b/d, the most in years, at 92.7% utilization with autumn maintenance deferred, and exporting 1.8 million b/d, near the record. Roughly a third of US diesel production is leaving the country during peak domestic demand.
