Our Gran Canaria adventure starts here. 🌴✈️ After flying from Milan to Gran Canaria with easyJet, around 4 hours later we finally landed on the island. We had booked our rental car online with Avis Budget and the pick up was quick and easy, exactly what we needed after the flight. 🏛️ FIRST STOP: VEGUETA Instead of heading straight to the hotel, we decided to start exploring immediately and drove to Vegueta, the historic heart of Las Palmas. Walking through its colourful streets, historic buildings and small squares was our first real taste of the island. We stopped at Casa de Colón, one of the most famous buildings in Vegueta. The house is connected to Christopher Columbus and his voyages to the Americas and today it’s a museum dedicated to the history of those journeys. From there, we continued to Plaza de Santa Ana, one of the most iconic squares in the old town. And then… we met the famous Santa Ana dogs. 🐕 These eight bronze statues have been watching over the square for more than a century and have become one of the symbols of Vegueta. They were placed in front of the cathedral in the late 19th century and are definitely one of those little details you notice while exploring the city. 🍴 LUNCH IN VEGUETA After walking around for a while, it was time for a little break. We stopped at Flow Vegueta, a really cosy spot where we had a quick lunch. The atmosphere was welcoming and the staff were incredibly friendly and fun, exactly the kind of place we enjoy discovering while travelling. Then back to the car and off to our hotel. 🏨 CHECK IN: PUERTO DE LA LUZ We chose to stay in Puerto de la Luz because of its convenient location for the places we wanted to visit during the trip. We were lucky enough to find parking right underneath the hotel with a special discounted rate so check in was pretty much effortless. The hotel also had a terrace, swimming pool and gym all included for guests. We deliberately decided not to include breakfast. Since we already knew that some mornings would start very early we preferred having the freedom to grab some fresh fruit and prepare something to take with us. The room was simple but comfortable, very clean and had everything we needed plus a lovely view over the sea and harbour. 🌊 🌊 FIRST SWIM IN THE ATLANTIC But there was no way we were going to spend our first afternoon in Gran Canaria without getting in the ocean. So we headed to Playa de Las Canteras, one of the best known beaches in Las Palmas. It stretches for several kilometres along the city and is protected by La Barra, a natural reef that helps create calmer waters in parts of the beach. For us the plan was much simpler: get in the water and enjoy our first swim in the Atlantic. 🌊 🌅 SUNSET & DINNER After a quick shower at the hotel we headed to Taberna Chica, where we had booked a table. And if you’re planning to eat there, our little tip is to arrive around sunset. Watching the sun disappear over the Atlantic while having dinner was the perfect way to end our first day. We ordered a mixed seafood grill and some good wine, sat back and finally slowed down after a day of travelling and exploring. 🍷🌅 Because that's really how we like to travel. We want to see as much as possible, discover new places and make the most of every day but we also don't want to rush through everything. We love finding local food, talking to people, taking a swim, sitting somewhere with a view and simply enjoying where we are. And after a full first day in Gran Canaria… it was time for bed. 😴 Tomorrow, another adventure begins. 📍 DAY 1 Milan ✈️ Gran Canaria Vegueta 🏛️ Flow Vegueta 🍴 Puerto de la Luz 🏨 Las Canteras 🌊 Sunset 🌅 Taberna Chica 🍷 And this was only the beginning. 🌴 #grancanaria #laspalmas #vegueta #lascanteras #travelvlog #canaryislands #travelcouple #trip #laspalmasdegrancanaria #spaintravel
