Bonjour,

Hello,
Picture a majestic medieval fortress rising from the rock, suspended between sky and valley. For nearly a thousand years, the Château de Peyrelade has stood guard over the entrance to the spectacular Tarn Gorges, in the heart of the Aveyron region.
Built between the 11th and 12th centuries, this fortified castle takes its name from the Occitan *Castèl de Pèiralada*, literally meaning "castle of the broad stone." The name makes perfect sense when you discover this impressive fortress, built directly onto a rocky spur overlooking the Tarn Valley.
Its strategic location made it one of the most important strongholds in the historic Rouergue region. For centuries, Peyrelade controlled access to the Tarn Gorges, protecting trade routes and monitoring the passages between the limestone plateaus—known as *Causses*—and the valleys below.
However, this prime location also made it a coveted prize. Throughout its history, the castle was the scene of numerous conflicts. It was besieged several times during the Hundred Years' War, the Wars of Religion, and raids by mercenary bands. Unusually, ownership was shared among several lords—a system of co-lordship that could involve up to four owners, sometimes even bound by ties of suzerainty.
At its peak, Peyrelade was a virtually impregnable fortress. Three successive lines of defense protected its inhabitants. Fortified gateways lay behind the first ramparts. A second enclosure housed the living quarters and the parade ground. Finally, the third protected the imposing keep—standing nearly fifty meters tall—which was accessible only via a drawbridge.
Inside this main tower were an oven, a cistern, and a belfry with a bell used to warn the population of danger. To this day, the surviving ruins bear witness to this exceptional military architecture. The walls, stretching over 250 meters, reach heights of up to 10 meters and thicknesses of more than two meters.
Yet, like many medieval French fortresses, Peyrelade could not withstand the passage of time or the shifting nature of royal power. Its dismantling was reportedly ordered in 1663 during the reign of Louis XIV, continuing the policy initiated by Cardinal Richelieu to curb the influence of major feudal strongholds.
After a long period of abandonment, the castle was revitalized starting in 1977 through major archaeological excavation and restoration projects, spearheaded by Pierre Bloy, the then-mayor of Rivière-sur-Tarn.
The site has been open to the public since 1996, welcoming thousands of visitors each year who come to discover its history, summer events, and—above all—one of the finest panoramic views in Occitanie.
Listed as a Historical Monument since 1998, Château de Peyrelade is also part of the famous "Route des Seigneurs du Rouergue" (Lords of Rouergue Route), a tourist trail linking twenty-three of Aveyron’s most remarkable castles.
Today, as drones reveal the full beauty of its spectacular setting, Peyrelade continues to captivate. Amidst limestone cliffs, ancient ramparts, and magnificent landscapes, this stone sentinel remains one of the most impressive testaments to the Middle Ages in Occitanie.
Welcome to Château de Peyrelade… a journey through a thousand years of history.
