A Vanished Name, An Eternal Gold - Unveiling the 14th Century Bohemian Master

A vanished name. Nine surviving panels. One extraordinary visual language that helped transform 14th-century Bohemian painting. This video explores the anonymous Master of the Vyšší Brod Cycle, also known as the Master of Hohenfurth, and the remarkable group of panels created around 1345–1350. Against timeless gold backgrounds, his figures begin to acquire physical weight, occupy space, bend, grieve, and move—bringing together the elegant rhythms of northern Gothic art with new approaches to volume and bodily presence associated with Italian painting. We follow the cycle from the Annunciation and Nativity through Christ’s suffering, Resurrection, Ascension, and Pentecost, while examining the Rosenberg patronage behind the commission and the influential idea of reading the nine panels as a three-act visual theology. Modern scientific analysis adds another dimension to the story: the workshop made sophisticated use of oil-based binding media decades before the great 15th-century Netherlandish tradition. The panels also survived a dramatic 20th-century journey through Nazi confiscation, the Altaussee salt mines, Allied recovery, and eventual restitution to Vyšší Brod Monastery in 2014. The artist’s real name may be lost, but his vision is not. More than six centuries later, the gold still shines—and the figures still speak.
