Bookmakers gave Alex Eala a 2% chance of winning the 2026 Wuhan Open.
Two years ago she lost in the first round here. Last year she couldn't
even make the main draw. This week she arrives as the No. 13 seed,
ranked 18th in the world. So why does every number still say no?
In this video I break down the full Alex Eala story heading into the
WTA 1000 Wuhan Open: the three results in 2026 that most people never
connected, the decision she made last month that risked a WTA penalty,
and the detail buried in this Wuhan draw that the 2% does not account for.
Alex Eala is 21 years old and already the most successful Filipina
tennis player in history. No woman from the Philippines had ever been
ranked inside the WTA top 100 in singles before her. In 2025 she beat
Jelena Ostapenko, Iga Swiatek and Madison Keys on her way to the Miami
Open semifinals. For a year after that, people argued about whether it
was real. Then 2026 happened: a title in Birmingham, the fourth round
at Wimbledon, and her first WTA Tour title in Washington, which pushed
her into the world's top 20 for the first time.
Her Wuhan draw opens against Chinese qualifier Han Shi, with Aryna
Sabalenka chasing a fourth title here and both Elena Rybakina and
defending champion Coco Gauff out of the field.
