What if the Moon started drifting away from Earth at 1 km every second, starting right now?
How long until anyone noticed, and when would we lose it for good? We follow it minute by minute, then day by day.
Today the Moon really is leaving us, at about 3.8 cm a year. In this video we speed that up roughly 800 million times. The first people to notice are astronomers bouncing lasers off the mirrors Apollo left behind. Within half an hour, total solar eclipses are gone forever. By day one the tides are down to about half, by day seven to about six percent, and around day thirteen the Moon slips out of Earth's gravitational bubble and becomes a small planet of its own, taking its craters, its lava tubes, six flags, two golf balls and twelve people's footprints with it.
