Chris Kamara: Jose Mourinho Told Me What To Say On TV

José Mourinho had just given Radio 5 Live nothing. Asked about Ashley Barnes’s tackle, asked about the penalties Chelsea didn’t get, he turned every question back on the interviewer and finished with a line that shut the whole thing down: nobody’s interested in my opinion. Chris Kamara heard it driving home. Minutes later his phone rang 📞 It was Mourinho. Had Kamara heard what happened in his game today? Kamara said no - lying through his back teeth, as he admits. So Mourinho told him. Barnes should have been sent off. Chelsea should have had two penalties. And then: I’m coming on your show tomorrow, and you’re going to say that 😅 Kamara tells Jeff Stelling that he had his own integrity to think about, that the guest (James Beattie) booked for Goals on Sunday had to be stood down, and that nobody at the production office believed Mourinho would actually turn up. He did. He insisted his game went first, against the show’s usual running order. Then he sat on the sofa and said nothing for fifteen seconds - which is an eternity on live television - until Ben Shepherd told him that if he wasn’t going to speak they might as well all go home. What followed ran for twenty-one minutes, in his second language, and took in every incident and every referee he’d had a problem with in English football 😳 And there’s a second call in this story. The night before, Sean Dyche had rung Kamara with the opposite version - that from the dugout the referee couldn’t possibly have seen the tackle, and that Burnley might have been due one penalty at most. When Dyche found out Mourinho was booked, he rang straight back. Don’t stitch me up. Kamara’s verdict: Dyche was right.
