Will Pucovski made 62 on his Test debut for Australia in January 2021 and never played another Test, retiring at 27 after thirteen known concussions. He is often called Australia's unluckiest cricketer, but this documentary asks whether luck was ever the right word for what happened to him.
The film follows Pucovski from the Melbourne Cricket Club's junior program and a record-breaking under-19 championship to back-to-back Sheffield Shield double centuries. It covers his rain-interrupted debut at the SCG and the bouncer in Hobart that ended his career. Along the way it looks at the mental health breaks that kept pulling him back from the edge of Test cricket, and at his own account of symptoms he says never fully cleared.
Key points:
The panel that changed the count: a 2022 review that included independent neurologists concluded that some of his reported concussions were something else entirely.
Where it began: the 2014 school football training session that Pucovski first played down as "a bit of a head injury," and later called the biggest day of his life.
After cricket: his move into coaching, a reported confidential settlement with Cricket Australia and Cricket Victoria, and a lawsuit against his old school whose allegations have not yet been tested in court.
Drawing on contemporary reporting and Pucovski's own words, the documentary separates genuine misfortune from a longer story about a single injury, how it was handled, and what it cost.
