First, my apolgies for the over-modulated audio on my mic. My audio and video capabilities are a work in progress. I will be upgrading my field audio soon. Hang in there with me!
The vertical loop in this video was made by Walt Spieth, DK9SQ. This antenna was lent to my by father, W2BIL, who purchased it at Hamvention nearly 25 years ago. Walt is now a silent key and the antenna is no longer in production.
The antenna is designed for operation on10-40 meters. 80 and 60 meters is possible as a pure vertical, but the defeats the benefits of a loop. Since it is a loop it does not need any counterpoise or radials, although a broadband tuner is needed to bring the antenna into resonance.
I deployed the antenna on a drive on mount and guyed it with a plastic braided nylon rope to a tent stake in order to keep it from swinging in the wind.
Propagation was not optimum today. I was able to make contacts on 30 and 20 meters. There as no love on 17 and above. Still, I managed a total of 40 contacts on both CW and SSB.
One neat thing about this antenna is its lower noise floor. The loop configuration did a good job of rejecting signals from its nulls. Also, the fact that the DK9SQ is more oriented to the magnetic field helps greatly in reducing noise.
If you can find this antenna at a hamfest or in the used market it's worth looking at. I plan on using it more often in Florida during the winter.
