Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now was originally a single released by the band in 1984. Then later added to the compilation Hatful of Hallow. This song was The Smiths first single to reach U.K charts coming in at No.10. The B side “Suffer Little Children” was based off the Moor murders in Moorland fields overlooking Manchester. Between 1963-1965. I have heard (don’t know if it’s true), that it was the first song Morrissey and Marr collabed on and wrote together. Rest In Peace to the 5 victims of these horrific murders. Pauline Reade, John Kilbride, Keith Bennett, Lesley Ann Downey, and Edward Evans. Lyrics: I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour But heaven knows I'm miserable now I was looking for a job, and then I found a job And heaven knows I'm miserable now In my life Why do I give valuable time To people who don't care if I live or die? Two lovers entwined pass me by And heaven knows I'm miserable now I was looking for a job, and then I found a job And heaven knows I'm miserable now In my life Oh, why do I give valuable time To people who don't care if I live or die? What she asked of me at the end of the day Caligula would have blushed "Oh, you've been in the house too long" she said And I naturally fled In my life Why do I smile At people who I'd much rather kick in the eye? I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour But heaven knows I'm miserable now "Oh, you've been in the house too long" she said And I naturally fled In my life Oh, why do I give valuable time To people who don't care if I live or die?
