LONG BEACH, Calif. — September 6, 2026 — Powerful surf generated by Hurricane Marie battered Long Beach’s Alamitos Peninsula Sunday afternoon, sending waves crashing into beachfront homes and flooding portions of E Ocean Boulevard.
The storm-driven waves caused flooding in homes along the peninsula, prompting homeowners to deploy sandbags in an effort to limit further water damage. Despite those efforts, the powerful surf overwhelmed some of the barriers as waves continued to pound the coastline.
As conditions deteriorated throughout the afternoon, lifeguards rushed to remove large wooden boards that had been torn apart and carried toward the shoreline by the waves. The debris created an additional hazard for surfers in the area.
Sections of the boardwalk were also left covered in debris washed ashore by the powerful surf.
Surf conditions intensified into the evening, peaking at approximately 6 p.m. Some waves appeared to reach heights comparable to the nearby three-story beachfront homes, highlighting the severity of the conditions along the coast.
The flooding, debris and heavy surf created hazardous conditions for residents, pedestrians and surfers throughout the afternoon and evening.
