Five recordings are used: rain hitting the window, the body of the rain, the sheet of it further out, and two separate recordings of thunder — the short ones and the long rolls. Each runs on its own loop of a prime number of seconds — 433, 1033, 883, 223 and 503 — so the five never line up the same way twice; the whole mix takes about 1.4 million years to come back to where it started. The thing I learned making this one: thunder and rain want the same part of the sound. A roll of thunder lives almost entirely below 150 Hz, and so does the low hiss underneath heavy rain. Mixed the ordinary way, the rain fills that space from end to end and the thunder cannot get out from under it — the first version had no thunder in it at all, measured or heard. So the rain layers here are lifted off the bottom and the whole low end is left empty, for the thunder alone. Lightning is never heard, only the air it left behind.
