Do not blink right now. Resist the muscle twitch pulling down your lids. While your cornea is already burning, a stalking tiger can hold its gaze for ten straight minutes without closing its eyes once. Closing yours was supposed to be simple maintenance. It isn't.
You spend roughly ten percent of your waking life in absolute darkness, shutting your eyes nearly twenty thousand times every single day. But if a wild animal closed its eyes that often, it would simply cease to exist.
We are taught in school that blinking is just routine ocular maintenance to keep the cornea wet. Yet across the animal kingdom, predator and prey alike survive with barely a fraction of our blink rate. This video explores the evolutionary physics of the blink, why a human blink is actually an active neurological throttle, and how digital displays broke an ancient ancestral safety contract.
