A lie told once is a mistake. A lie told to protect a lie is a trap. And Nathaniel has been waiting for her to fall for it. 🖤
Three times the money went missing from his house, and three times he remained silent. 💵
He did not curse her name or jump to conclusions, he simply counted the bills and waited, refusing to know, rather to find out what lengths would she go to in order to protect her beloved.
Today, he decides to stop waiting.
Esther is mid-pace out the door, a bag over her shoulder and a grin on her lips, but the sight that greets her is not the road. The front door is locked from the inside. 🔑
"Babe... why is the door locked?"
Nathaniel makes no move to get up. His legs are heavy, his hands folded over his stomach in a pose that is more menacing than any scream could ever hope to be, as he addresses his wife stilling standing in the doorway, her face like chalk:
"Nobody leaves this house until I find out what is going on."
Esther lets out a laugh, then whines, begging him to let her go first, saying they can talk about it later, but her pleas fall on deaf ears, as Nathaniel gives the next orders: "Call the maid." 😨
An old woman bustles into the room, her hands clasped before her, eyes lowered, and with a grace of someone who knows nothing of the storm about to engulf her. Nathaniel gives his wife a strange look, then instructs her to search the maid.
Here is where the comedy is born, for Esther unwittingly takes on the role of the villain, as she allows herself to be searched by an innocent, and in doing so, reveals the truth in layers, peeling back the skin to reveal the rot beneath. She lets the old woman rifle through her pockets before stating, in a small, wavering voice, and with a sigh that sounds suspiciously like guilt, that maybe the money is hidden somewhere in the house.
All of it, every word, is another nail in her coffin. 🪦
Her voice softens, she calls him her love, begs his forgiveness, saying she should have trusted her maid instead of him...
Now he rises, and delivers the punchline that finishes her off 😳
"Let the maid search YOU."
Her protests are weak, her bag clutched to her chest like a lifeline, until Nathaniel tears it from her hands revealing bundles of cash tied together with string. 💵
But Esther has one last trick up her sleeve, and it is called heartrending drama, as she cries and wrings her hands, telling him the money was for her sick mother in the hospital, and that she simply could not bear to watch her die.
Nathaniel's face remains an unreadable mask as he dials his wife's mother's number and listens.
What the old woman says next will shatter Esther's heart 💔
...and provide an object lesson for us all in the art of deception.
Why does a woman who has everything need to steal?
Why does the husband she loves continue to keep silent?
And what does the old maid's stoic demeanor say about the kind of people we think we are?
👇 Watch till the very end, and you will understand!
