The Vikings crossed the Atlantic centuries before Columbus. But why would anyone risk a dangerous ocean voyage to reach an unfamiliar coast?
It wasn't simply about discovering a new world. From the challenges of life in Norse Greenland to the resources and opportunities waiting farther west, discover what drew the Vikings toward North America — and why reaching it was easier than staying there.
Archaeology confirms a Norse presence at L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland, Canada. Tree-ring research has even established evidence of Norse activity there in AD 1021. But the stories told in the Vinland sagas were written down long after the voyages, meaning some details remain uncertain.
And North America was not an empty land waiting to be discovered. Indigenous peoples had lived across the continent for thousands of years before the Norse arrived.
