Why were the Gospels written decades after Jesus’ death? Explore the history behind Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John — and the letters, memories, and spoken traditions that came before them.
Jesus was executed around AD 30. Mark, widely regarded as the earliest of the four surviving Gospels, is commonly dated to around AD 65–75. But those intervening decades were not silent.
Paul’s earlier letters already preserve traditions about Jesus’ teachings, death, resurrection, and final meal with his followers. Christian communities were sharing these traditions before the familiar Gospel narratives took shape.
This documentary examines how stories travelled through the ancient world, why spoken testimony retained authority, and how the loss of the first generation and the destruction of Jerusalem may have increased the importance of written accounts.
We also explore Papias and the “living voice,” the earlier narratives mentioned by Luke, the literary connections between the Gospels, and what the tiny manuscript fragment P52 can — and cannot — tell us.
What does the gap mean for our understanding of these texts? We examine the surviving evidence, competing explanations, and the limits of what historians can reconstruct.
