Your journey begins where the wild North Sea collides with the historic mouth of the River Tyne. Standing atop the windswept headland, the jagged, skeletal ruins of Tynemouth Priory and Castle rise like a gothic crown against the skyline.
Below these towering medieval fortifications lies King Edward's Bay—a secret, crescent-shaped cove carved directly into the dark cliffs. Tucked into the sand here is Riley’s Fish Shack, a legendary shipping-container kitchen where the scent of wood-fired smoke mixes with the salty air, serving up exceptional local catches straight from the waves to your plate.
Leaving the hidden cove behind, you hit the coastal trail heading north, where the landscape opens up into the breathtaking expanse of Longsands Beach. A mile-long highway of pale golden sand, it is a playground for local surfers slicing through cresting white rollers. Pressing further north, the rugged coastline leads you into Cullercoats Bay. Sheltered by two ancient stone piers, this historic fishing haven is a vibrant hub of brightly coloured sea kayaks, traditional coble boats, and still waters reflecting the sky.
After soaking in the panoramic northern views, turn your back to the wind and retrace your steps southward along the shoreline.
Your coastal expedition concludes back at the southern tip of Longsands, stepping off the sand and straight into Crusoe’s Street Food Kitchen. With a global menu of sizzling gyros, spicy skewers, and cold craft drinks, it is the ultimate beachside outpost to kick back, listen to the rhythmic roar of the tide, and watch the sun dip below the horizon.
