In this episode of P³, we react to The Godfather – Orchestral Suite, performed live by the Danish National Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Sarah Hicks. The suite brings together the unforgettable music of Nino Rota from Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather, transforming themes associated with family, Sicily, love, loss, power, and violence into a remarkable live orchestral experience. This 2018 performance was part of The Morricone Duel concert at DR Koncerthuset and features the Danish National Symphony Orchestra and Danish National Concert Choir, with solo violinist Christina Åstrand, mandolinist Mads Kjølby, and Jakob Weber on melodica. As two musicians, we discuss Nino Rota's melodies, orchestration, instrumental colors, harmonic language, thematic development, and how film music can communicate character and story even without the images on screen.
