Some of these trees were already growing before the United States became a country. In this video, I’m hiking the Hemlock Trail at Laurel Hill State Park in Pennsylvania to spend some time among its ancient eastern hemlocks, estimated to be 200 to 300 years old. After a long winter break, I headed out early to revisit one of my favorite Pennsylvania trails before meeting up with Dave for a backpacking trip in the Laurel Highlands. With morning sunlight hitting Laurel Hill Creek, the first spring wildflowers starting to appear, and giant trees towering overhead, this was exactly the kind of hike I needed. Most of the surrounding forest was logged in the early 1900s, but this small patch of old growth survived. Standing beneath these trees, it’s hard not to wonder how this spot escaped and everything it has witnessed since. Enough talking, let’s get to hiking. #LaurelHillStatePark #PennsylvaniaHiking #OldGrowthForest
