An emotional moment unfolded during the farewell ceremony for former Rwanda Defence Force officer Colonel Tom Byabagamba when his two sons stood before mourners to honour their father’s life and memory. The brothers read messages written by relatives, friends, and other people who were unable to attend the ceremony. Through those tributes, they reflected on Tom Byabagamba’s life, the relationships he built, and the personal memories left behind beyond his public identity as a senior military officer. The most heartbreaking moment came when Byabagamba’s elder son, Brian, became overwhelmed with emotion while speaking about his father. This Rwanda Updates report presents that emotional family moment respectfully, including the messages read during the ceremony, the two sons’ memories of growing up with their father, and the legacy they said he left within their family. Tom Byabagamba once served as a senior officer in the Rwanda Defence Force and commanded the Presidential Guard. He had previously served in President Paul Kagame’s personal protection detail and later participated in a United Nations peacekeeping mission in South Sudan. He was arrested in August 2014 and prosecuted alongside retired Brigadier General Frank Rusagara and retired Sergeant François Kabayiza. In 2016, Rwanda’s Military High Court convicted Byabagamba of several offences and sentenced him to 21 years in prison. In December 2019, the Court of Appeal upheld his conviction but reduced the sentence to 15 years. Byabagamba died while imprisoned on August 25, 2026, at the age of 59, after approximately 12 years in detention. His elder brother, David Himbara, announced the death on behalf of the family. The precise medical cause and complete circumstances surrounding his death had not been publicly established when this report was prepared. The expression “overcome with emotion” used in this report refers to Brian being unable to continue speaking normally because of grief. It does not suggest that he suffered a medical seizure or another confirmed health emergency.
