What Happened to Fulton Sheen After He Died Still Has No Explanation
Fulton J. Sheen died on December 9, 1979.
But decades later, events surrounding his remains, his sainthood cause, and a child who was declared medically beyond explanation would bring his name back into the headlines.
Sheen had been one of the most famous Catholic voices in America.
Millions watched *Life Is Worth Living*.
Millions more heard his radio broadcasts.
Then, after his death at age 84, he was buried beneath St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York.
For decades, that appeared to be the end of the story.
It wasn't.
In 2002, the Catholic Church formally opened Sheen's cause for canonization.
Then came an extraordinary case from Illinois.
In 2010, a baby named *James Fulton Engstrom* was born showing no signs of life.
For **61 minutes**, according to the investigation conducted for Sheen's cause, the child had no heartbeat.
His family began praying specifically for Fulton Sheen's intercession.
Then his heart began beating.
The child survived—and reportedly developed without the severe neurological damage doctors would ordinarily expect after such prolonged cardiac arrest.
Church investigators examined medical records and testimony from doctors, nurses, emergency personnel, and family members.
In 2014, a Vatican medical panel unanimously concluded that the recovery lacked a medical explanation.
Theologians subsequently approved the case as being attributable to Sheen's intercession.
But another unusual chapter was developing.
Sheen's remains were still in New York.
The Diocese of Peoria wanted them transferred to Illinois, where Sheen had been ordained a priest and where his sainthood cause was being promoted.
A years-long legal fight followed.
Finally, in June 2019, Sheen's remains were removed from St. Patrick's Cathedral and transported to Peoria.
His body was placed in a new tomb inside the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception.
Only days later, Pope Francis formally recognized the miracle attributed to Sheen's intercession.
His beatification appeared imminent.
Then, only weeks before the planned December 2019 ceremony, the Vatican postponed it.
The delay lasted for years.
In 2026, the Holy See finally allowed the process to move forward again.
And on **September 24, 2026**, Fulton J. Sheen was formally beatified and became **Blessed Fulton Sheen**.
So what exactly happened after Fulton Sheen died?
Was there something mysterious about his physical remains?
Was his body found incorrupt when it was moved?
And what does the Catholic Church actually claim happened to the Illinois child whose recovery was attributed to his intercession?
In this video, we separate documented events from stories that have grown around Sheen online.
We examine the transfer of his remains from New York to Peoria, the extraordinary medical case investigated by the Vatican, the long interruption of his beatification, and the events that ultimately led the Church to declare him Blessed nearly 47 years after his death.
The documented story is already remarkable.
It doesn't need another legend added to it.
