Gelsenkirchen used to be the driver of the German economic miracle post World War 2, when Germany made an incredible comeback after being completely destroyed. This comeback was build upon the foundation of coal and steel coming from hundreds of mines in Gelsenkirchen and the surrounding area of the Ruhr valley at large. Today Gelsenkirchen is Germany's poorest city and has largely been forgotten by the rest of Germany. I went to find out what life is really like nowadays in Gelsenkirchen.
