Delhi Police issued "guidelines" for journalists ahead of the protests on 10th October: carry an ID, keep a "safe distance," don't obstruct, stand apart from protesters.
But what is a "safe distance" when tear gas, lathis and water cannons are in play? And who gave an armed state authority the right to decide where reporters stand?
This isn't etiquette. It's about controlling who gets to watch the state use force.
The timing is rich. Women journalists say they were grabbed, dragged and sexually harassed by officers at Jantar Mantar. Their complaints were allegedly buried under an "internal inquiry." Then came the Instagram lecture on professionalism.
In this episode of #LetMeExplain, Pooja Prasanna looks at why these guidelines are less about ethics and more about controlling who gets to watch the state use force.
