Queen Nzinga was a warrior Queen from what is now Angola who fought against the Portuguese slave traders. Some of her people were captured but were able to keep their fighting skills and culture through the middle passage to Brazil. There they had to disguise their martial art as a dance creating what is now called Capoeria.
