A slow walk through the “gang” the narrow backstreet alleys of Pekanbaru, the capital of Riau province on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. Away from the main roads, these metre-wide lanes thread between kampung neighbourhoods and work as footpath, parking lot, laundry line and front porch all at once. Too narrow for cars, they belong to motorbikes, street cats, and the small shops and homes that open straight onto them, and eventually they spill out into the traditional morning pasar (market). Pekanbaru is one of Indonesia’s fastest-growing cities, but daily life in the gang hasn’t changed much. This is the side of the city most visitors never see. 📍 Pekanbaru, Riau, Sumatra, Indonesia 📷 More travel photography: capturetravels.com
