In 1820, Arthur Schopenhauer scheduled his Berlin lecture at the same hour as Hegel, the most influential philosopher in Germany. Only a handful of students came. This is the human story of what happened next: the empty room, more than thirty years of silence, and the unsigned foreign review that finally got people reading him. It is also an honest look at what this story does and does not mean for anyone who has worked for years without being noticed.
Key years:
1818–1819: “The World as Will and Representation” is published
1820: Schopenhauer lectures at the University of Berlin, at the same hour as Hegel
1822: He leaves Berlin and travels to Italy
1851: “Parerga and Paralipomena” is published when he is 63
1853: John Oxenford’s “Iconoclasm in German Philosophy” appears in the Westminster Review
1859: A third edition of his major work appears
1860: Schopenhauer dies
