Hoover Dam history: how thousands of Depression-era workers tamed the Colorado River and built America's great dam.
The Colorado River flooded farms in some years and dried them out in others. In 1931, with America deep in the Great Depression, six construction firms joined forces to build the highest dam in the world in the heat of Black Canyon. Their superintendent, Frank Crowe, drove the work at a relentless pace.
Men came from across the country with nothing but the hope of a wage. They lived in tents, then in the new town of Boulder City, and worked on ropes hundreds of feet above the river. More than a hundred died. The dam was finished early, and it still lights cities across the American South West.
