Leaving the historic city of Ypres, we headed south through the beautiful countryside of the Ypres Salient towards Kemmel. It’s only around a 20-minute drive, but the scenery changes from bustling town streets to peaceful rolling hills, country lanes and villages that witnessed some of the fiercest fighting of the First World War.
Our base for exploring the Kemmel battlefield was Camping Lettenberg Valley in Heuvelland. Nestled on the slopes of the Kemmelberg, the campsite provided a peaceful and relaxing setting after long days spent visiting cemeteries, memorials and museums.
We found the campsite to be clean, welcoming and well maintained, with spacious pitches, excellent facilities and a friendly atmosphere. It was the perfect location for exploring Kemmel Hill, the Pool of Peace and Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery. The area is also ideal for walking and cycling, with numerous signed routes passing through the surrounding countryside.
If you’re planning a First World War battlefield tour, we’d happily recommend Camping Lettenberg Valley as a peaceful base to experience this remarkable part of Flanders.
