On one hand, it presents the ideal picture of what knighthood should be: on the other, it has become the designated symbol for the perfect society. Since the early Middle Ages, the Round Table has been viewed as a prototype and as a model of an intellectual community. Allied groups of power and strength which are united through common interests, ideals, and goals are symbolized through the metaphor of a table in the shape of a circle. Innumerable legendary tables and figures, ranging from Parzival and the Holy Grail, to Tristan, can be traced back to King Arthur's Knights of the Round Table.
