What began in 1972 with just 13 balloons has grown into a nine-day international event featuring more than 500 balloons, with pilots and visitors coming from around the world. The event takes place at the enormous Balloon Fiesta Park, where spectators can actually walk among the balloons and crews as they prepare for launch. The centerpiece is the Mass Ascension, when hundreds of balloons gradually lift off and fill the New Mexico sky. Albuquerque’s unique weather and geography create the famous “Albuquerque Box,” a pattern of air currents that can allow pilots to control their direction and potentially return toward the launch area. The Fiesta also features the Dawn Patrol, special-shaped balloons, ballooning competitions, and evening Balloon Glows, when the balloons remain on the ground and their burners illuminate them against the night sky. Beyond the balloons, the Fiesta has become a major celebration of New Mexico itself, with food, local artisans, entertainment, and the unmistakable smell of roasting chile filling the grounds. The 2026 Fiesta runs October 3–11 and will be the 54th event, with the theme “The Scenic Route,” celebrating the centennial of Route 66. It has become so visually iconic that the organizers describe it as the world's most photographed event, making Albuquerque's October skies one of the city's defining attractions.
