A cozy Victorian sleep story for grown-ups, set in the old stone town of Stamford in the late summer of 1851, the year England finally scrapped the window tax. Settle in with Phoebe Leadbitter, a young glazier who spends her days putting glass back into windows that were walled up for half a century, until a tall house above the river asks her to open a room nobody has stepped into since 1797.
It's a slow, gentle bedtime story for adults, with no villains and no frights. Just the smell of fresh putty, a workshop cat with no fixed address, a small old lady in dove grey silk, and a window that was closed with its glass still in it. Why that window, of all the windows in the house? I'll let you sit with that one the way Phoebe does.
Was there a window seat or a corner in a house you grew up in that always felt like yours? I'd really love to hear about it in the comments, and where you're listening from tonight.
What's real and what isn't
The window tax was real. It began in 1696, Pitt tripled the rates in 1797, and Parliament replaced it with a house duty in 1851. All over England people unblocked old windows that summer. Stamford's new three-arched Town Bridge, finished in 1849 to replace a narrow medieval one with five arches, is real too, and so is the old crown glass with its faint green ripples. Phoebe, her uncle Walter, Miss Quenby, Lydia and the house itself are made up, and so is the sealed room. Not every blocked window in England was a tax dodge either. Plenty were built blind just to make a front look even, which is exactly what Phoebe finds out.
