An asteroid hits New York, and every few seconds we make it bigger. A country is out when the blast reaches its capital. The United States goes first at 1.8 km (1.1 miles), then Canada, the Caribbean, Europe and the rest of the world. We find how far that reaches with the impact formulas of Collins, Melosh & Marcus (2005, Earth Impact Effects Program), for a stony asteroid hitting at 20 km/s. The formulas assume flat ground, so at thousands of kilometres the sizes are rough what-if numbers, but the order is exact: capitals fall in order of distance from New York. Capitals: Natural Earth. Real asteroids in the video: 2024 YR4 (about 60 m), which in 2025 briefly had about a 3% chance of hitting Earth in 2032 and has since been ruled out; Apophis (about 340 m), which flies past Earth on 13 April 2029; the asteroid that ended the dinosaurs (about 10 km); Eros (about 17 km). The largest asteroid known to come near Earth, Ganymed, is about 35 km wide.
