Before leading the Pledge of Allegiance, Anne Stockdale provided an inspirational moment conveying a message of gratitude and anchored in a quote from Marcus Tullius Cicero: “Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all the others. ” After Tom Mitchell introduced visiting Rotarian [and guest speaker] Laura O’Sullivan from Club 33, Pres Karol called on all Red Badgers to rise and prepare to answer the question: What Red Badge requirements have you yet to accomplish? With only one Red Badger — Mary Washington — in attendance it was a very brief Q & A! Tom Edison was recognized for his birthday today and Blue Bucket donations [on each table] were solicited to help Alzheimer’s research. Pres Karol was well into a description of the Mystery Rotarian before the crowd realized it was Karen Laedlein. Karen was presented a “bouquet” of rosemary and after the meeting provided a detailed description of her fig ice cream! See the YouTube video here:    • Coronado Rotary Meeting - August 26, 2026   ROTARY NOTES OF INTEREST & ANNOUNCEMENTS: Among the numerous “Around Town” activities highlighted was the dedication of Coronado Rotary’s 100 Year gift to the Port and City. Pres Karol praised Past Presidents Suzanne Popp and Bill Sandke for their tireless efforts making the sign a reality. Highlighted for the month of September were a number of activities to include two Flags on the Avenue days and the 06 September Concert In the Park sponsored by Coronado Rotary. [See our website for a full listing of events] Sara Cheverton noted that Tim Cusick will be travelling to Ensenada on September 19 and invites three Rotarians to go with him to visit the Limbs of Freedom Clinic. If you have a Global Access card and would like to see the amazing work they do to change people’s lives, please contact Tim. He is soliciting new men’s tennis shoes [sizes 6 – 10] to distribute during the visit. In response to technical difficulties experienced by Club members, Doug Weisbarth and Joe Melloy provided brief “How to’s” on, respectively, signing up for Rotary luncheons and proper use of the new Club microphones. We were pleased to see David Gardner back among us after his heart procedure. Jane Simeral reminded the Club of PP Al Ovrom’s Celebration-of- Life, Saturday, August 29 at 2:00 pm at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Coronado. PP Bob Rutherford presided over the induction of Kathie Woiwode [Mike Woiwode’s bride] as the club’s newest Rotarian. One Rotarian was overheard to say, “Is that Mike’s wife or daughter?” Welcome to the best club in the universe, Kathie! Jeff Tyler provided an overview of the Coronado Scouting Committee which has been in existence since 1928 and has distributed tens of thousands of dollars in support of scouting projects. Jeff gave many examples of projects that have been done over the years in Coronado. eanmarie Bond introduced the day’s speaker, Laura O’Sullivan of the Lucky Duck Foundation. The daughter of Coronadoans George and Becky Galdorisi, Laura is the Director of Philanthropy and Major Gifts at Lucky Duck Foundation whose mission is to prevent and alleviate the suffering of homelessness throughout San Diego County. Growing up on Coronado, Laura credits her upbringing in the Coronado Schools and the Coronado community — including many Coronado Rotarian members who have been teachers, coaches, mentors and encouraging neighbors — for inspiring her career in philanthropy and civic leadership. She lives in Coronado with her husband, JT, and their three sons, Jack, Larkin and Davis. The Lucky Duck Foundation is based on the belief that “if we collaborate and coordinate local efforts, call on elected leaders to take action, follow the facts, and apply sound business principles, we can meaningfully address homelessness. ” In a high-energy presentation, Laura provided an overview of the Lucky Duck Foundation as it seeks —successfully—to prevent and alleviate the suffering of homelessness throughout San Diego County. She highlighted the tremendous impact Lucky Duck has had on San Diego, citing numerous examples of lives changed.
