Once a year four of us go up on ropes into the thing that stands over our spring and our roofs, and we take off exactly that season's growth, because it cannot shed and everything it grows it keeps. This is a folk horror audiobook from the world of Radelneth, and it is a lopper's account of the year the fruit came up at a height nobody had cut.
My name is Ilva Reth and I am the youngest lopper at Hettmoor, which is eleven houses under one enormous crown. I can stand in our yard and point out every cut made in that tree for thirty years, because it fruits at a cut, a year later, and it grows toward whoever last took from it. The fruit is not a trick and it is not bait. It is our wage, and the children eat it off the low branches for a week after the lop is signed.
The county calls it falsewood. We call it the Work, and if you ask anybody here why, you get the saying and not the reason. Something used to crop it. Whatever it was went out of this range before my grandmother, and the hamlets on this side of the forest picked the work up, and we have not put it down since.
This year there were three clusters forty feet above the last cut anyone made, over one roof, in three heights, in falling order. A hook cuts a line. Those were not lines. It does not tell one wound from another, and a year ago a man came off that crown on my rope.
There is a cut that gets no fruit. I went up in the dark and made it, and Hettmoor has lived under what it left ever since.
Beastinarium — Encounters. One creature. One witness. No explanation.

⌖ ABOUT THIS WORK
Every word of this is mine. The world of Radelneth, its bestiary, this hamlet and the working post its people hold, this story and this script were written by hand, by me, and read aloud from a recovered-document frame. The pictures are brought to life with AI image tools the way a filmmaker uses a camera, and the voice is a synthetic narrator I direct line by line. The craft, the world and the words are human.
