Why Is Melina Burned and Bodyless in Elden Ring

The obvious answer is that something terrible happened to her before we ever met her. But Shadow of the Erdtree gives us a new way to look at that mystery and Messmer may be the key. In this Elden Ring lore investigation, I compare Melina and Messmer as two children of Marika connected by kindling, visions of fire, and the burning of sacred trees. Messmer still has a physical body despite carrying kindling that burns inside him. Melina, meanwhile, appears already burned and bodyless before eventually sacrificing herself as kindling at the Forge of the Giants. That contrast raises a different possibility: What if Melina wasn't turned into kindling because she lost her body? What if being bound to fire and kindling is the reason she lost it in the first place? I'll look at Melina's strange movement around the Lands Between, her connection to the Erdtree, the Flame of Ruin, Destined Death, Messmer's Kindling, the Abyssal Serpent, and the possibility that the serpent consuming Messmer kindling may explain why one sibling remained embodied while the other did not. Some parts of this theory remain deliberately unresolved. Elden Ring never tells us exactly when Melina was burned, whether she once possessed an ordinary physical body, or whether Messmer's serpent actually protected him from his own kindling. But taken together, the parallels between these two characters suggest that Melina's burning, bodylessness and purpose may all be pieces of the same mystery.
