American homeowners lose more than $50 billion a year to heat leaking straight through a single object sitting in nearly every wall of their house: the window. Physicists at the University of Colorado Boulder just built a material thinner than plastic wrap that blocks heat almost as well as the insulation inside your walls, while staying more transparent than the glass it's applied to.
In this video, we break down the real, peer-reviewed science behind this breakthrough: a study published in the journal Science by physicist Ivan Smalyukh and his team, revealing a silicone gel material called MOCHI (Mesoporous Optically Clear Heat Insulator) that's over 99% transparent and blocks roughly 90% of heat transfer, using a structure inspired by ordinary bubble wrap.
