How did mass extinctions reshape the history of life on Earth? Five times, the planet experienced biological crises powerful enough to erase most of the species alive at the time. Oceans collapsed. Reefs disappeared. Entire groups of animals vanished. And after each extinction, life slowly rebuilt the world in a different form. In this slow and detailed history of mass extinctions, we travel through more than four hundred million years of Earth's history, following the five great extinction events that transformed the course of evolution.
We begin in the ancient oceans of the Ordovician, where marine life had reached an extraordinary level of diversity before rapid glaciation, falling sea levels, and major environmental changes triggered the first of the five great extinctions.
We then move into the Devonian, when the expansion of forests on land helped transform Earth's climate and ocean chemistry, contributing to a prolonged series of ecological crises. As marine ecosystems collapsed, some of the survivors were lobe-finned fish whose descendants would eventually become the first vertebrates to live on land.
Next comes the Permian-Triassic extinction, the Great Dying, the most severe mass extinction known from the fossil record. Massive volcanism in Siberia transformed the atmosphere and oceans, causing extreme warming, ocean anoxia, acidification, and the collapse of ecosystems across the planet.
From the survivors of that catastrophe came a radically different world, one in which archosaurs and eventually dinosaurs would rise to dominance.
Then we reach the End-Triassic extinction, when massive volcanic activity accompanied the breakup of Pangaea and eliminated many of the groups competing with the early dinosaurs.
And finally, sixty-six million years ago, the Chicxulub asteroid struck Earth.
The impact triggered fires, tsunamis, darkness, cooling, food-web collapse, and a global ecological crisis that eliminated the non-avian dinosaurs along with many other forms of life.
But this story is not only about extinction.
