Why does the Atlantic Ocean become more dangerous the deeper you go? 🌊
From the sunlit surface to the bottom of the Puerto Rico Trench, the Atlantic contains a sequence of radically different worlds. As you descend through 5 major ocean zones, sunlight disappears, pressure rises, and food becomes increasingly scarce. Yet life does not simply disappear. It changes.
In this Deep Sea Sleep Stories journey, we descend toward the Milwaukee Deep, the deepest known point of the Atlantic Ocean, reaching approximately 27,480 feet below the surface. Along the way, we explore the twilight zone, the midnight zone, the abyssal plain, and the hadal zone, discovering how animals such as bristlemouths, dragonfish, anglerfish, and amphipods survive conditions that would be impossible for humans.
We explore the strange biology created by darkness, extreme pressure, and limited food, including bioluminescence, deep-sea migration, specialized reproduction, marine snow, whale falls, and the remarkable chemistry that allows organisms to live under enormous pressure.
We also descend into the history hidden beneath the seafloor. Sediment layers preserve evidence of ancient climate changes, mass extinctions, earthquakes, and geological events stretching back tens of millions of years. The Puerto Rico Trench is not simply a deep hole in the ocean. It is part of a much larger system connecting the seafloor, ocean circulation, marine life, and the atmosphere above.
And perhaps the most fascinating part is how little of this world humans have actually seen.
The deeper we go, the less familiar the ocean becomes. The Atlantic is one body of water, yet it contains worlds shaped by completely different physical and biological rules.
