The traveler reached Windroad Pass before sunrise, hoping to cross the Dunmoors while the weather remained calm. For three days, the high country had been hidden beneath drifting rain, but on the morning of the autumn equinox the clouds lifted just enough to reveal the old road winding through the heather. The air was cold and unusually still. No rain moved across the distant slopes, and even the grasses along the dry-stone wall seemed to be waiting. The traveler followed the pale road uphill, staff touching stone at each step, while the eastern horizon slowly brightened behind a veil of mist. Near the highest bend stood a weathered cairn that did not appear on the road markers below. Half of it remained in shadow while the other half caught the first light. A flat stone had fallen from its side during the recent storms, exposing a carving beneath. It was a spiral, but not a closed one. The line curved inward before opening toward the east, as though the maker had intentionally left the circle unfinished. The traveler knelt beside it. Rain had softened every other mark on the stone, yet the open spiral remained unusually clear. There was no inscription, no name, and nothing to explain why anyone had carved it so high above the nearest settlement. As the sun reached the horizon, the mist below the pass separated into two broad banks. For only a few moments, the land to the east and west could be seen with equal clarity: dark hills behind, pale valleys ahead, and the road balanced between them. Then the wind returned. Mist began to cross the pass again, covering the distant valleys one by one. The traveler stood, adjusted the deep green cloak against the cold, and continued east. By the time the cairn disappeared behind the ridge, nothing unusual remained except the memory of the unfinished spiral and the strange precision with which it had faced the rising sun. The traveler did not yet know whether it was a boundary mark, a pilgrim sign, or something older. For now, it was simply the first mark on a road that seemed to lead farther into Awenreach than any map suggested. Three hours of Celtic fantasy music and misty highland ambience inspired by the autumn equinox in the Dunmoors, with Celtic harp, low whistle, ancient cairns and the wide balanced light of Awenreach. Created for reading, writing, studying, relaxing and quiet work.
