The Pakruojis Manor was first documented in 1531. Its founder and first owner was M. Vakavičius, the tijūnas (district administrator) of Rietavas. Following the marriage of Countess Aleksandra Münsterytė to Wilhelm von Ropp in 1786, the estate passed into the possession of the Ropp family as a dowry. The manor house was filled with artistic treasures. Of particular interest and rarity was the collection of fine art—paintings, graphic works, and sculptures. Theodor von Ropp is considered the founder of this collection; he traveled to France, Italy, and Spain, bringing numerous works by Italian, Dutch, and French artists back to the estate. Beginning in the era of Baron Wilhelm von Ropp, an agricultural enterprise was established on the estate, generating substantial revenue. In 1866, a manor pharmacy was established, alongside a hospital with twelve beds. In 1909, a brewery and a steam-powered mill were put into operation on the estate. Following the First World War, the Pakruojis Manor operated as a model estate, renowned for its industrial-scale livestock farming. After the war, a Soviet collective farm was established on the Pakruojis estate grounds. In 1959, the manor house was renovated; until 1979, it housed an agricultural college, and subsequently, a training center for agricultural personnel. Today, the reconstructed buildings of the Pakruojis Manor estate offer accommodations, dining services, venue rentals, event planning, active leisure opportunities, as well as thematic excursions and entertainment programs. The Pakruojis Manor estate stands as a living, functioning architectural heritage site, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into life on a manor estate in the late 19th century, and remains accessible to the local community, guests, and tourists from Lithuania and around the world.
