This film traces how Carboniferous swamps filled with scale trees and giant horsetails became the Appalachian Basin, powering the 1917 peak of 100 million tons and 181,000 miners. From the 385-million-year-old fossil forest at Cairo, New York to the 1959 Knox Mine Disaster and the Centralia mine fire burning since 1962, it explores the 8 billion tons still underground.
