Brief historical introduction. Jérica is a town in the Alto Palancia district of the province of Castellón, within the Valencian Community in the Kingdom of Spain. The earliest references to the present-day town date back to the Islamic period, when it belonged to the Taifa of Valencia. It was conquered by Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar ("El Cid") in 1098; the lower section of the Mudéjar-style tower and the oldest parts of the castle still remain from this period. After Jérica was reconquered by Guillermo de Montgrí, it was granted a town charter (*Carta Puebla*) in 1249. In 1255, King James I of Aragon gifted the town of Jérica to Teresa Gil de Vidaure, followed by the town of Alcublas in 1257. Historical heritage: The Mudéjar-style bell tower dates from 1634 and is notable for being detached from the church. Church of Santa Águeda (17th and 18th centuries).
