Foundations | Conversion as Ground | EP. 11 Method in Theology (CWL 14)

For four functional specialties, theology has exercised a necessary restraint. Research gathered the data. Interpretation established what authors meant. History reconstructed what was going forward. Dialectic exposed the horizons underlying conflicting positions. But none of them, as specialties, declared which position was true. Sooner or later, theology must move from reporting the convictions of others to speaking in its own voice. It must pass from indirect discourse to direct discourse, from describing what people believed to affirming what is actually so. The moment it does, a fundamental question arises. On what ground does the theologian take a stand? In Episode 11 of this series on Bernard Lonergan’s Method in Theology, we examine Foundations, the fifth functional specialty and the decisive transition from theology’s first phase to its second. Lonergan’s answer is striking. The foundation of theology is not primarily a premise, an axiom, or a collection of propositions. Foundational reality is conversion: religious, moral, and intellectual. The ground of theology is the converted theologian. A living theology advances through discovery, judgment, correction, and development. The threefold conversion is therefore not merely something the theologian speaks about. It is a fundamental change in the human reality that the theologian is. From that transformed subject arise the categories through which theology thinks. General categories emerge from the structure of human consciousness. Special theological categories emerge from religious experience, from the dynamic state of being in love with God without conditions or reservations. Yet Foundations does not determine which doctrines are true. Its categories remain models: interlocking sets of terms and relations that provide theology with a horizon and a vocabulary. Their doctrinal truth must be established in the next specialty. The ultimate criterion is not escape from subjectivity, but its authenticity. Genuine objectivity is the fruit of authentic subjectivity. The theologian reaches truth by becoming attentive, intelligent, reasonable, responsible, and responsive to the gift of divine love.
